नई दिल्ली। हिमाचल प्रदेश के छह बार मुख्यमंत्री रहे कांग्रेस नेता वीरभद्र सिंह का 87 साल की उम्र में गुरुवार को निधन हो गया। वे लंबे समय से बीमार थे। उन्होंने सुबह 3:40 बजे शिमला के इंदिरा गांधी मेडिकल कॉलेज (IGMC) अस्पताल में आखिरी सांस ली। यहां वे करीब दो महीने से भर्ती थे। सोमवार को उन्हें सांस लेने में तकलीफ थी, जिसके बाद उन्हें वेंटिलेटर पर रखा गया था।
वीरभद्र सिंह को दो बार कोरोना हुआ। पहली बार 12 अप्रैल और दूसरी बार 11 जून को उनकी रिपोर्ट पॉजिटिव आई थी। एक दिन पहले ही बुधवार को IGMC के मेडिकल सुपरिटेंडेंट डॉ. जनक राज ने कहा था कि वीरभद्र सिंह की हालत गंभीर, लेकिन स्थिर बनी हुई है। वीरभद्र सिंह का जन्म 23 जून 1934 को हुआ। उनके पिता पदम सिंह बुशहर रियासत के राजा थे।
वीरभद्र सिंह 1962 में पहली बार महासू सीट से लोकसभा चुनाव जीते थे। इसके बाद वे 1967, 1971, 1980 और 2009 में भी लोकसभा के लिए चुने गए। वीरभद्र पहले रोहड़ू सीट से विधानसभा चुनाव लड़ते थे। बाद में रोहड़ू सीट आरक्षित हुई तो उन्होंने 2012 में शिमला ग्रामीण सीट से चुनाव लड़ा। 2017 में उन्होंने यह सीट बेटे विक्रमादित्य सिंह के लिए छोड़ दी और खुद अर्की से चुनाव लड़े। अभी वे अर्की सीट से विधायक थे।
1983 में पहली बार CM बने, केंद्रीय मंत्री भी रहे
वीरभद्र सिंह ने 1983 से 1985 तक पहली बार, 1985 से 1990 तक दूसरी बार, 1993 से 1998 तक तीसरी बार, 1998 में कुछ दिन के लिए चौथी बार, 2003 से 2007 तक पांचवीं बार और 2012 से 2017 तक छठी बार हिमाचल प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री बने।
वे UPA सरकार में केंद्रीय इस्पात मंत्री भी रहे। उनके पास सूक्ष्म, लघु और मध्यम उद्योग मंत्रालय भी रहा। इससे पहले वे इंदिरा गांधी की सरकार में दिसंबर 1976 से 1977 तक केंद्रीय पर्यटन और विमानन राज्य मंत्री रहे। वे 1982 से 1983 तक केंद्रीय उद्योग राज्यमंत्री रहे।
